Animal Well Being

Real Estate

Bob Evans Farms has always been committed to assuring the responsible care of animals that provide food products for our customers. Under the direction of experts from our company, along with those from leading academic institutions, Bob Evans Animal Well-Being Committee has initiated a number of actions to assure we meet our customers’ expectations for responsible animal care, including:

  • Requiring all suppliers to submit their animal care and/or welfare policies to Bob Evans and their compliance with our animal care standards on an annual basis.

  • Creating an animal care mission statement that is in our communication to employees and suppliers via our company Code of Conduct and is available on our Web site in the “Our Company” section and in the Corporate Responsibility Report in the investor relations section.

  • Engaging and working closely with three internationally respected animal well-being experts to serve on an animal well-being advisory committee that meets with us twice a year to provide guidance and feedback on animal well-being issues.

Bob Evans is an active member of the Coalition for Sustainable Egg Supply (CSES) studying the impact of housing alternatives for egg-laying hens in the U.S. As a member of CSES, Bob Evans, along with food companies, research institutions, non-governmental organizations and other stakeholders, has begun a comprehensive and holistic evaluation of three different housing systems, including cage-free aviary systems, enriched/furnished housing which includes nests and perches, and the current housing environments used by a vast majority of today’s U.S. food supply system.

The coalition is committed to evaluating the impact of each of these systems on the environment, food safety, worker safety, animal health and well-being, and affordability of food. This research will help Bob Evans and other food system organizations make informed purchasing decisions that are ethically grounded, scientifically verified and economically viable and ultimately in alignment with the needs of consumers. You can learn more about CSES by visiting www.sustainableeggcoalition.org.

We also actively monitor current research regarding the use of controlled atmosphere stunning, or CAK, in the poultry industry. We have found that to date, the research remains inconclusive as to whether CAK is truly a better alternative to the conventional stunning methods used by most of the United States poultry industry.
